Discount Calculator
The sale price is the original price times (100 − percent off) divided by 100: 30% off $80 is $56, and you save $24. Two discounts in a row are not added: 20% off and then an extra 10% off is a 28% total discount.

How to calculate a discount
Multiply the original price by the percent off and divide by 100 to get the amount you save. Subtract it from the original price for the sale price. The shortcut is to multiply by the share you pay: 30% off means you pay 70%, so $80 × 0.70 = $56.
Stacked discounts are not added
"20% off, plus an extra 10% at checkout" applies the second discount to the already reduced price. $100 becomes $80, then $72. The total discount is 28%, not 30%. The order of the two discounts does not change the result. Enter the second rate in the extra field to see the real total.
Finding the percent off from two prices
Divide the amount saved by the original price and multiply by 100. A jacket marked down from $120 to $90 is $30 ÷ $120 × 100 = 25% off. Dividing by the sale price instead gives 33% and overstates the deal.
| Original | Off | You save | Sale price |
|---|---|---|---|
| $50.00 | 15% | $7.50 | $42.50 |
| $80.00 | 30% | $24.00 | $56.00 |
| $249.99 | 40% | $100.00 | $149.99 |
Sales tax, where it applies, is usually charged on the discounted price.
